At the starting line, we're in the presence of two luxury subcompact SUVs. The Volvo XC40 has been on our roads since 2019, while the BMW X1 has been around since 2012. Beyond these historical landmarks, the two vehicles differ in several respects, so much so that you'll have to read on to find out who the winner is.
First and foremost, the BMW X1 is powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine that produces 241 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. This mill is paired with a 7-speed automatic transmission.
As for Volvo's XC40, it can count on a 4-cylinder 2.0 L turbo + light hybridization engine producing 247 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. This engine is paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission with manual mode. So, unlike its rival, you'll enjoy dynamic, responsive, and greener driving.
In short, both engines are efficient, but the Volvo XC40 Canada is slightly more powerful than BMW's X1 (247 vs. 241 hp). The Sino-Swedish Volvo SUV also benefits from a more assertive driving experience than the 2024 BMW X1.
While the BMW X1 offers a narrower cabin than the last version, the dashboard is full, and the leather-wrapped steering wheel gives the impression of hiding a small part of the 8.8-inch touchscreen. Another minor annoyance is that the central armrest has no interface or direct connection with the dashboard. Finally, while seat comfort is certainly decent, the driver's position seems a tad less ergonomic than it was originally.
The Volvo XC40's interior is uncluttered, with ultra-comfortable seats - undoubtedly the best in the industry - a dashboard featuring a 9.0-inch touchscreen for quick access to the information you need, and a simple, efficient instrument cluster. This typically Volvo interior is also eye-catching for its ergonomics, the simplicity of its controls and storage spaces that won't get in anyone's way. In short, you'll appreciate the Scandinavian look, without unnecessary frills!
Many small SUVs show that towing equipment is not recommended. Such is the case with the BMW X1, which joins the club of less efficient vehicles when it comes to towing capacity.
Conversely, the Volvo XC40 SUV for sale can tow up to 3,500 lbs (or 1,588 kg). It's a leader in its segment. So, it'll come in handy for weekend getaways or helping your neighbor move equipment.
In short, it's a good idea to choose an SUV that's also capable of getting the job done!
While the 2024 BMW X1 has a starting price of $55,052, the Volvo XC40, with a starting price of $47,400, is considerably less expensive than its rival.
The BMW X1 comes in two trim levels, while the Volvo XC40 is available in three trim levels (Core, Plus and Ultimate), each more tempting than the last. The Core trim has an MSRP of $47,400, while the Plus trim has a starting price of $52,550, and the Ultimate trim has an initial price of $57,050. In short, you get more for your money with the 2024 Volvo XC40.
Both SUVs care about the driver, occupants, and other vehicles in the immediate environment. The Volvo XC40 SUV doesn't skimp on safety systems, however. These include, among others:
The BMW X1 features much of the same driver assistance systems.
At the finish line, the 2024 Volvo XC40 offers more than its BMW X1 rival. It performs well, it offers a more open and user-friendly interior, it can tow heavy equipment, it offers superior comfort with its ergonomic seats, it boasts more innovative features than the BMW X1, and above all, it's more economical to buy or lease.
But even more spectacularly, it's Car and Driver's No. 1 choice for 2024!
Don't miss out! Come and discover the all-new 2024 XC40 at your Volvo dealership, Volvo West Island, just off Autoroute 40 and a few minutes from Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue.
